“Prepare for landing” and my heart starts pounding with excitement. I know that, as doors will open, a warm tropical breeze will put me in an instant holiday mood.
In these regions the climate is gentle for my wintery skin and life is good for my stressed-out brain.
The airport is a beautiful pink building, one entrance, one luggage belt and one exit ( Flamingo International Airport ). Very appropriate, as flamingos and pelicans know that life is good on this island.
Bonaire is unique. Captain Don made access lanes in the reefs during the seventies, so that the double reef can be reached by land. No boat needed.
If you are a diver, you only need a pickup truck with some tanks. On the west coast you can swim from one beautiful reef to the other. It is one big marine park. STINAPA rangers are on a constant mission (even under water) to protect the corals. There’s also a beautiful project to support sea turtles.

As from 2011 Bonaire became a province of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Which brings advantages as well as disadvantages. After the beautiful marine life and the surfing at Sorobon, you can enjoy watching the Homo sapiens cruisiensis in Kralendijk. No better place than Karel’s Pier to enjoy the parade of bodies leaving their cruise ship for more food…
A special mention goes to our friend / diving instructor Sam Bekaert. He was our very first mentor and gave us our mission to keep on diving as much as possible. Thanks to Sam we discovered beautiful dive sites and not at least Salt Pier. Along the concrete poles you’ll find lots of new marine life and big schools of beautiful fish and bigger tarpons. Amazing !
Enjoy this beautiful place, but let it be your best kept secret !
